Chimney Damper FAQ
What does the Chimney Damper do? * Controls rate of burning giving fantastic energy savings - it increases fuel efficiency as fuel burns more slowly, cleanly and efficiently. * Eliminates cold draughts and valuable heat escaping (with damper in closed position). * Reduces outside noise such as traffic or wind whistling or howling noises. * Eliminates sooty hailstones landing on living room rugs and birds' mess. Does the Chimney Damper work for all flue sizes? There a range of sizes to suit most flues including common 8" and 12 " flue sizes. Does the Chimney Damper work for gas or electric fires? No, it is designed for open solid fuel fires only. Will the Chimney Damper work with a back boiler Yes, it does work with back boilers. When the damper is half open the back boiler will heat up quicker and stay hotter longer as the fuel burns slower and a fraction of heat is reflected back on top of the boiler. Will the Chimney Damper suit any chimney? It fits 95% of chimneys. The standard chimney flue has an 8inch internal diameter and suits the most popular 7inch Chimney Damper . However, there are more sizes (6inch to 11inch) to fit various size flues. What is the Chimney Damper made from? It is made from HR4 Rolled steel, the base plate is 5mm thick. The bushings are stainless steel as is the 3mm cable. The damper is held in place by 3 M8 bolts and fire cement. The Chimney Damper is manufactured in Galway to ISO and BS standards. What safety features does the Chimney Damper use? * It cannot close accidently as it's designed so the damper will swing open by force of gravity if disturbed. * It can extinguish a chimney fire (but not the base fire). * It is circa 96% airtight as there must be airflow through a chimney in order to keep the chimney flue dry. How long will the Chimney Damper last? There is a standard 5 year guarantee with the Chimney Damper although it is expected to last for many years longer. If the cable were to burn out then it can easily be replaced - this is only expected to occur under prolonged and extreme conditions such as many years of burning non-smokeless coal. How much can I expect to save? According to the Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI) new dwellings, a chimney damper reduces the air changes in a room from 40 m3/h to 20 m3/h, as it can now be regulated. The damper will improve your Building Energy Rating (BER) rating and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. How long does it take to fit? Fitting time is 40 to 60 minutes. The fitter will be respectful of your home ensuring a clean and tidy installation. How is the Chimney Damper fitted? It is fitted below the chimney flue and above the gathering. A 7.5” collar is fitted to the base of the flue. There is a disc attached to the collar and a 3mm stainless steelcable attached to the disc. Does the Chimney Damper look unsightly or obtrusive? No, it is hidden from view inside the chimney breast. Only the 3mm cable appears below the flue and runs discretely down the side of the fire place opening. Does it take strength to adjust the Chimney Damper? No, the damper can be adjusted from open to closed with very little effort by adjusting the cable handle between forefinger and thumb. ![]() | ||
